This article presents a critical mapping of the university field of Communication and Journalism in Mexico, based on three rounds of data collection using the CONEICC Higher Education Institution Recognition Instrument (covering the periods 2022–2023, 2024, and 2025–2026). Institutional variables regarding the public-private divide are interpreted through the lens of the critical sociology of the academic field, focusing on accreditation, academic working conditions, faculty mobility, degree completion pathways, and self-descriptions of educational models. The evidence reveals institutional heterogeneity and participation biases favoring private higher education institutions (HEIs), the consolidation of accreditation terminology—highlighting the analytical significance of the "in-process" status—and structural tensions linked to the ratio of student enrollment to full-time faculty and the prevalence of course-based (adjunct) teaching. It is argued that these contractual and institutional conditions directly impact not only pedagogical continuity but also the capacity to sustain scientific research and lead projects involving social engagement and impact. The article concludes by proposing an agenda for the longitudinal stabilization of the instrument and the strengthening of modules concerning graduates and public impact.
